JDict is a Japanese-English offline dictionary that boasts a robust database of over 160,000 entries, more than 10,000 kanji characters, and nearly 60,000 example sentences. The application draws significant inspiration, both functionally and visually, from the renowned "[Imi_wa?]" dictionary designed for the iOS platform.
Current Features:
- Works offline
- Displays kana/romaji as you type
- Supports wildcards in vocabulary search
- Provides access to recent words, examples, and kanji
- Offers romaji mode in search queries
- Kanji search categories include ON/KUN readings, Nanori readings, and meaning results
- Enables rapid example search functionality
- Includes a feature to extract words from sentences
- Features kanji stroke order animations
- Furigana algorithm consistently matched throughout (potential minor bugs)
- Component view displays all kanji with specified components ordered by JLPT level and word frequency
- Kanji view showcases all compounds related to given kanji sorted accordingly
- Allows for kanji search by components, inspired by the "Japanese" dictionary
- Enables browsing of kanji by JLPT and School Grades
- Includes notes and lists feature (works like favorites with folders/sub-folders)
- Vocabulary search recognizes some basic grammar structures while typing
- In the word detail view, examples are categorized by word meaning when applicable
The array of features present in JDict is rudimentary at this stage. The substantial size of the database file (approximately 230MB) owes to extensive example sentence data and numerous essential indexes for smooth operation.
Upcoming Development Plans:
- Enhance user-friendliness of the application (e.g., list search capabilities)
- Implement a vocabulary learning feature utilizing lists
- Add functionality to export lists to Anki
- Include external links within vocabulary entries
